What is Aging in Place?

Aging in place is a term used to describe a person living in their residence of choice, for as long as they are able, as they age. This necessitates that health services and other support comes to them over time as needed. Excluding hospitalizations, aging in place helps seniors maintain a quality of life as well as foster emotional security and stability needed to maintain health and happiness.

Currently, the majority of senior persons aged 65 and older are living either with a spouse or alone in their own home. Many of these elderly people struggle with everyday tasks, and their health care. For many, their quality of life goes down as they get older.

As this happens we assume it is in our loved ones best interest to move them to a nursing home or senior facility. Some conditions may warrant this, however, for many (and their families) this may not be the best solution. Senior care facilities are costly, care can be inconsistent, services are an additional charge, and in pandemic situations our loved ones are exposed to unnecessary risk.

A new AARP survey of adults shows that 3 out of 4 adults age 50 and older want to stay in their homes and communities as they age—yet many don’t see that happening for them. While 76% of Americans age 50 and older say they prefer to remain in their current residence and 77% would like to live in their community as long as possible, just 59% anticipate they will be able to stay in their community, either in their current home (46%) or a different home still within their community (13%).
